The user selects the columns of the 2x2 standard matrix for a linear transformation by choosing its columns vectors on a graph of R^2. The applet provides a wealth of information about the transformation. The image of a box with an enclosed Z in shown, as well as the real eigenvectors of the matrix. A purple dot appears at the image of the cursor's position, as well as an arrow from the cursor to the dot. Other dots appear at the pre-images of the standard basis vectors. The determinant, trace, and eigenvalues appear beside the graph. This is a lot of information to deliver in one place, and it requires some training to know exactly what one is seeing.
