    Bessel became director of the new observatory at Konigsberg. In 1838 he would be the first to accurately measure the parallax of a star.

    Baldassarre Boncompagni born in Rome. A noted historian of mathematics, he published his own journal on the history of mathematics from 1868 to 1887 and was responsible for making known the importance of Leonardo Fibonacci's Liber Abaci.

    Kurt Schutte, the last of Hilbert's 75 doctoral students, defended his dissertation on logic. Hilbert's students included Courant, Dehn, Hecke, Kasner, Kneser, Neugebauer, Speiser, and Weyl.
