Edwin Bidwell Wilson born in Hartford, Connecticut. As a student of J. Willard Gibbs at Yale he codified the physicist's lectures on vector analysis into a textbook (1901) that profoundly influenced the use and notation of the subject. In 1912 he published a comprehensive text on advanced calculus that was the first really modern book of its kind in the U.S.
