Edward Huntington born in Clinton, New York. This enthusiastic and innovative teacher was professor of mechanics at Harvard from 1919 to 1941. His book, The Continuum (1917), was the standard introduction to set theory for many years. In 1928 he recommended the "method of equal proportion" for the apportionment of representatives to Congress; in 1941 this method was adopted by Congress.
