Explore the Impact of Legislative Restrictions on Higher Education in Florida – A Panel Discussion at MAA MathFest 2023

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is hosting a panel discussion on the topic "The Future of Higher Education: Lessons from Florida" at this year's MAA MathFest in Tampa, Florida.

Washington, DC - The panel, "The Future of Higher Education: Lessons from Florida," is scheduled for Wednesday, August 2nd, from 3:50 pm to 4:50 pm, at the Tampa Bay Convention Center in Ballroom B/C.The recent legislative efforts in Florida targeting academic institutions and classrooms have raised concerns about the future of education in the state. This includes attempts to restrict educational content, track and eliminate state funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, and limit critical discussion and debate. These actions have the potential to significantly impact intellectual and academic freedoms, restricting the inclusion of historically marginalized groups. The situation is not unique to Florida, as PEN America’s Index of Educational Gag Orders demonstrates similar trends elsewhere.

Organized by the MAA, this panel session will bring together prominent experts in higher education to examine the consequences of these legislative restrictions on the future of academia. The discussions will center on the urgent need to safeguard intellectual freedom and academic autonomy as essential pillars of a robust educational system.

The panelists will dissect the impact of such restrictive laws and provide valuable insights into the potential harm to higher education. Faculty members and educators attending this session will gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by these developments and explore actionable strategies to preserve the integrity of academic principles. Audience members will be able to submit questions during the panel for a brief Q&A to follow.
