Getting Started as a New MAA AMC Competition Manager
Welcome to the MAA AMC program! We are thrilled that you are joining our community and making this exciting mathematical experience available to your students. Here is some information on how to become a competition manager and administer the MAA AMC for the first time.
- Check your eligibility to host the MAA AMC for students.
Please ensure that you and your educational site meet our eligibility requirements. For example, student competitors and their parents may not register as competition managers. - Decide which competitions to host.
Will you administer the AMC 10/AMC 12 in November and/or the AMC 8 in January? The AMC 10 and AMC 12 each have two versions with different competition dates, while the AMC 8 can be administered any day over a designated competition week. For both, the daily timeframe for when administration is permissible is 8 am to 11:59 pm ET.
Learn more about the mathematical content of each competition and find this year’s dates and registration deadlines. - Get your school administration on board.
Share with your administrators some information about why the MAA AMC is worthwhile for your students. Our pricing model can help you estimate the costs to your institution based on the anticipated number of students. The earlier you register, the more money you save on fees!
If you are a college or university, check your school’s policies for hosting events for minors and ensure you have space available for proctoring students. - Create an MAA AMC account and prepare for vetting.
Before you can register for the MAA AMC, you must create an account on our competition registration portal, following the directions in our Competition Manager Registration Guide.
Once our service center receives notice that you have created a competition manager account, they will contact you to obtain documentation proving that your educational site meets our criteria (if it is a new site) and that you are employed there. Please provide this documentation as soon as possible to avoid delays in the vetting process. Once you have submitted all requested documents, allow three business days for vetting.
You will not see the option to register for the MAA AMC until you and your institution have been vetted and you have been assigned as the competition manager for your institution.
5. Register for the MAA AMC and order your bundles by the deadline.
Once you receive notice that you have been vetted, you can register for the AMC 8, AMC 10, and/or AMC 12 and purchase student licenses in bundles of 10. You will have the opportunity to order more bundles later, but we must receive your payment before the student licenses will be added to the system.
You can pay for your order by credit card or check/bank transfer. For further details, refer to this registration guide and this registration FAQ. If you choose to pay by check, you must do so early enough that we will receive your school’s check in the mail before the AMC competition date.
6. Recruit students to take the MAA AMC.
If you are offering the MAA AMC to interested students across your school, you can print these flyers and post them in the hallways to recruit participants.
We also have letters for parents about the AMC 10/AMC 12 and the AMC 8 that you can print and send home with students so that their parents better understand the competition.
If you are a college or university, you can contact local schools that are not hosting the MAA AMC so they know they can send interested students to you.
7. Prepare for and administer the competition.
We have created guides to walk you through hosting the MAA AMC:
a. The AMC 10/AMC 12 Teachers’ Manual and the AMC 8 Teachers’ Manual provide a quick overview of AMC policies and hosting steps
b. The Hosting MAA Competitions Guide goes into more detail, explaining how to navigate the online AMC platform every step of the way.
c. New for 2025! You can send the Student MAA AMC Enrollment Guide to students so they can successfully sign up to take the AMC with you.
d. This guide is also new for 2025. It will help your students familiarize themselves with the AMC Student Portal and the competition's digital format
e. You can also learn all of our AMC policies here.
You will also receive email reminders and notifications related to the AMC you registered for, beginning in October. If you have registered and have not received any emails in your inbox or spam by the day before the competition, please let us know at amcinfo@maa.org.
