Washington, D.C. — The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jason Rosenhouse, Professor of Mathematics at James Madison University, as the new Editor of The American Mathematical Monthly, one of the world's most respected journals of expository mathematics. Dr. Rosenhouse begins in the role of Editor-Elect on July 1, 2026 and will officially take on the role of Editor on January 1, 2027.
Founded in 1894, The American Mathematical Monthly (often known simply as the Monthly) is widely recognized for publishing articles that illuminate the beauty, depth, and accessibility of mathematics for a broad audience of mathematicians, educators, and math enthusiasts. The flagship journal of the MAA, the Monthly has played a central role in advancing mathematical exposition and fostering intellectual curiosity across the mathematical community.
Dr. Rosenhouse brings to the editorship an outstanding record as a mathematician, educator, author, and communicator. A professor at James Madison University, his research spans algebraic graph theory, analytic number theory, and recreational mathematics. He is also widely known for his books and essays that make sophisticated mathematical ideas engaging and accessible to broad audiences. Rosenhouse also has a profound knowledge of the MAA journals in part gained through his service as Editor of Mathematics Magazine - the MAA’s peer-reviewed journal for teachers of collegiate mathematics and their students - from 2020 to 2024.
"Jason Rosenhouse embodies the spirit of The American Mathematical Monthly," said Matthew Salter, PhD, Senior Director of Publications at MAA. "His passion for mathematics, commitment to clear exposition, and appreciation for the diverse ways mathematicians engage with the subject make him exceptionally well suited to lead the journal into its next chapter."
Dr. Rosenhouse joins the Monthly at the beginning of a critical stage in the development of the journal that will see it grow from 10 to 12 issues annually, requiring significant reorganization of the journal’s editorial processes. Rosenhouse will play a key role in maintaining the journal's editorial vision and quality standards during the development process. He will work closely with associate editors, referees, and authors to maintain the Monthly's tradition of publishing articles that combine mathematical depth with exceptional exposition.
"It is an extraordinary honor to serve as Editor of The American Mathematical Monthly," said Dr. Rosenhouse. "For generations, the Monthly has showcased mathematics at its most elegant, surprising, and accessible. I look forward to working with the editorial team and our contributors to continue that tradition while exploring new ways to engage the mathematical community."
The MAA extends its sincere gratitude to the journal's outgoing interim editor, Franklin & Marshall professor Annalisa Crannell for her dedication and service. Under Dr. Rosenhouse's leadership, the Association looks forward to continuing the Monthly's long-standing tradition of excellence and its mission of sharing beautiful mathematics with readers around the world.
