US Team Earns Second Place at the 2026 Romanian Master of Mathematics

At this year’s 17th annual Romanian Master of Mathematics (RMM), held February 23–27, 2026, in Bucharest, Romania, the US team achieved second place. The RMM is a premier international high school mathematics competition that challenges students at the highest level while offering a unique opportunity to share ideas and connect with peers from countries around the world.

Over two days, students on 18 teams from 21 countries worked through six problems; the team score is based on the combined highest three individual scores.

The US team, selected and organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), has participated in the RMM since 2012. You can read more about the team selection process in our earlier announcement.

Each US team member received an individual medal for their rank among the 97 competitors. Liam Reddy, Jonathan Du, and Grant Blitz ranked among the top 10 participants, with Liam Reddy achieving first place.

Grant Blitz (Illinois) - Gold medal

Jonathan Du (California) - Gold medal

Shihan Kanungo (California) - Bronze medal

Team member Channing Yang said of the experience, “RMM was so much more than just a competition. All the teams were friendly to one another, and there wasn’t a brutal competitive atmosphere. RMM is a very difficult test, and its difficulty helped unite all the teams together to focus on conquering the problems rather than each other.”

The team was guided by US Team Leader John Berman and Deputy Leader Zachary Chroman.
