Robert L. “Bob” Devaney (1948 – 2025): Remembering a Life of Dedicated Service to the MAA

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) mourns the passing of Dr. Robert L. “Bob” Devaney, a lifelong member who served as MAA President from 2013–2015. He devoted himself to sharing the beauty of mathematics, fostering outreach for students and educators, and strengthening the MAA community through decades of service.

Dr. Devaney was a professor of mathematics at Boston University and earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973. Among his many honors, he notably received the MAA’s Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished University Teaching.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Devaney’s family and friends. His contributions to the MAA and the broader mathematics community leave a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations.
