US Team Earns 2nd Place at 2025 European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad

The US Team earned 2nd place in the 14th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), with each student also earning a gold medal for their individual performances. The EGMO is an international mathematics competition focused on gathering teams of young women from around the globe to engage in a two-day competition.

Typically, the competition is held in rotating European countries. This year, the US Team traveled to Prishtina, Kosovo to participate.

The US Team, selected and facilitated by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), has participated in the EGMO since it began in 2012. The 2025 US EGMO Team included: Shruti Arun (Colorado), age 17; Hannah Fox (California), age 17; Alansha Jiang (Washington), age 17; and Angela Liu (California), age 17. The US Team was led by Rachel Zhang and Serena An, who helped each student prepare and supported pre-competition engagement.

This year’s EGMO saw intense competition among 56 teams. The US Team placed second overall and was the only team in the competition to earn all gold medals. Liu and Fox were among the top 10 scorers of the tournament, ranking 7th and 9th place respectively.

The US Team for the EGMO competition is selected from top girl-identifying students. The selection process begins each fall with the MAA American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). Students who perform exceptionally well in the AMC qualify for a series of invitational competitions. Those who advance through these rounds may be invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP), a summer training camp focused on advanced mathematical problem-solving. A special thanks to Citadel and Citadel Securities for sponsoring this year’s team!

“We are very proud of the excellent performance of Team USA, the only team at the competition with every member earning a gold medal,” said Doug Ensley, MAA Director of Competitions. “This result is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, their teachers and their parents. Congratulations to the team members and their inspiring leaders, Rachel Zhang and Serena An.”
