Three Exceptional Professors Honored with MAA’s 2024 Teaching Awards

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) annually honors teachers who are making an impact on mathematics education with the Henry L. Alder Award. We’re elated to announce the 2024 Alder Award winners: Shelby Stanhope, Haydee Lindo, and Axel Brandt. 

Henry L. Alder Award

The Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics Faculty Member is to honor beginning college or university faculty whose teaching has been extraordinarily successful and whose effectiveness in teaching undergraduate mathematics is shown to have influence beyond their own classrooms.

Shelby Stanhope

Shelby Stanhope is celebrated for her innovative and passionate approach to teaching, which has had a transformative impact on her students, her institution, and the wider mathematical community.

Her teaching methods prioritize low-stakes formative assessment activities and anonymous participation opportunities, creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel empowered to succeed. Her enthusiasm for CalcPlot3D, 3D-printing, and how to best leverage these tools for student learning has led to valuable research collaborations and an NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education grant.

In recognition of her day-to-day teaching effectiveness and her dedication to advancing pedagogical innovations that enhance student learning, MAA is honored to present Shelby Stanhope with the 2024 Henry L. Alder Award. She expressed her gratitude for the recognition and the role the MAA community has played in her development as an educator: "The MAA community, programs, and conferences have shaped the educator I am today and will support my continued growth as best teaching practices evolve. I am grateful to be part of this community!"

Her contributions to mathematics education exemplify excellence in teaching and a commitment to advancing the field.

Dr. Haydee Lindo

Haydee Lindo's rigorous yet supportive approach to teaching is celebrated by students and colleagues alike, rooted in her belief that every student can excel in their course material.

Her passion for mathematics is described as "infectious" by her students, and her mentorship has guided several cohorts of undergraduates in completing publishable research in commutative algebra. Notably, a majority of her research students come from communities underrepresented in mathematics, and many of them are now pursuing graduate studies in mathematics or related fields, largely thanks to these transformative research experiences and her dedicated mentorship.

Upon receiving this honor, she expressed her appreciation: "This award is the result of the brilliance, grit, ambition, open minds, and good humor of my incredible students."

Her contributions to mathematics education and her mentorship's lasting impact on student's academic and professional journeys exemplify her commitment to excellence and inclusivity in the field. MAA congratulates her on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to her continued influence on the mathematical community.

Axel Brandt

Axel Brandt is recognized for his commitment to inclusive and equitable teaching practices, engaging students through active learning, using Open Educational Resources, and providing service learning opportunities.

In addition to his impactful classroom teaching, he has mentored over 15 undergraduates in research projects, several of which have resulted in co-authored publications with his students. Known as a "math community organizer," Axel has made significant contributions to professional development and community learning.

His dedication extends to outreach efforts with pre-college students and teachers, as well as teaching college students at all levels. Whether speaking with university parents or alumni, Dr. Brandt's energy and enthusiasm for mathematics is infectious and inspires others to embrace the subject.

Upon receiving the award, Axel expressed his appreciation: "Honored to be recognized and overwhelmed with gratitude to everyone who invested in my professional development. It's wonderful being part of such a supportive community!"

MAA commends Axel for his dedication to creating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment, his leadership in fostering a strong mathematical community, and his positive impact on students and colleagues.
