Recipients of the 2026 Beckenbach Book Award Announced

The Mathematical Association of America is proud to announce that Carrie Diaz Eaton, Alison Henrich, Steven Klee, and Jennifer Townsend have been awarded the 2026 Beckenbach Book Prize.

Beckenbach Book Prize

Established in 1986 as the successor to the MAA Book Prize, the Beckenbach Prize honors the late Edwin Beckenbach, a distinguished mathematics professor at UCLA and a key figure in the MAA's publications program. The prize recognizes authors of exceptional and innovative books published by the MAA and is awarded on an occasional basis. To be considered, a book must have been published within five years of the award year.

About This Year's Recipients

Navigating the Math Major: Charting Your Course is a practical and welcoming guidebook for undergraduate mathematics students. Written in a friendly, conversational tone, it covers everything from what to expect in common undergraduate courses to writing a resume, navigating conferences, and giving mathematical presentations, drawing on interviews with students and professionals in math-related careers.

While especially valuable for students just starting out, the book's guidance is equally useful for instructors and advisors looking to make the path through mathematical academia more transparent for their students. The prize recognizes Navigating the Math Major for its originality, accessibility, and genuine commitment to broadening who feels welcome in mathematics. Reflecting on this honor, Steven Klee wrote, “It is an absolute honor to be recognized with this year's Beckenbach Book Award! Thanks to Allison, Jen, and Carrie for being such amazing collaborators and for making me a better writer. This book wouldn't be possible without tremendous support from the MAA.”
