Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award Distinguished Service Award
The award recognizes service to mathematics that has been widely acknowledged as extraordinarily successful. The contribution of this individual influences the field of mathematics or mathematical education in a significant and positive way on a national scale. This award consists of a cash prize of $5,000, a citation, and the recognition of the American mathematical community.
Deanna Haunsperger was selected for this award for many reasons including her laudable career in mathematical research, education, and exposition. Moreover, she has demonstrated prolific service to mathematics, commitment to the association, and unwavering leadership to build a more inclusive mathematical community. “As a young mathematician, I wondered what I had to offer and where I belonged,” Haunsperger said. “I found my answers in the MAA through service to mathematics and I am humbled to be honored by the MAA, our welcoming professional community.”
MAA is a stronger association and a model for others because of Deanna Haunsperger’s insistence that we are fair, inclusive, and welcoming. “I have been lucky to work with Deanna, and benefit from her leadership across the Association,” said Michael Pearson, executive director of the MAA. “Her commitment to mathematics and leadership in inclusivity is something that we will long benefit from as an association.”
