“Camp” of Mathematical Queeries (CMQ) is a newfree program that will benefit our mathematical community and is currently accepting applications. The virtual program will be held from July 10 to August 9. CMQ is offered by the MAA in partnership with HRT, Radical Pedagogy Institute, The Queer Mathematics Teacher, andTeach about Women.
“Camp” of Mathematical Queeries was created to tap into the rich funds of knowledge and cultural histories of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, who remain vastly underrepresented in STEM fields, according to Brandie Waid, The Queer Mathematics Teacher founder and owner and co-founder of the Radical Pedagogy Institute.
CMQ is an immersive five-week virtual program tailored for LGBTQ+ students in high school. Applications are now being accepted; all interested participants should apply now, as spaces will fill up quickly. The application deadline is Sunday, May 21, 2023.
“At a time when queer and trans communities are under attack, ‘Camp’ is a space for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and educators to come together, celebrate, affirm, and support one another, all while engaging in mathematically rich exploration of concepts ranging from pre-algebra to college level mathematics,” said Waid.
This collaboration will provide mathematics students with a space to grow and learn skills that will service them both in and outside of the classroom.
“As an organization that prides itself in creating programs that align with its core values, the MAA Programs team is ecstatic to launch its first LGBTQ+ outreach program! At MAA, we celebrate inclusion and diversity and are proud to partner with Brandie Waid on this worthwhile opportunity for LGBTQ+ high school students to experience the beauty of mathematics,” said Kiera Edwards, MAA Programs and Grant Management Director. “MAA strives to create both traditional and nontraditional ways for our community to get involved with math and this program will definitely take math camp to another level.”
This enrichment program will:
- Foster high school students’ development of positive mathematical and LGBTQ+ identities.
- Support students in developing mathematics concepts in addition to mathematical problem solving and posing skills.
- Illustrate that students’ LGBTQ+ identities are powerful assets.
“‘Camp’ is a space of mathematical play and enrichment, a space that seeks to radically transform how we view what counts as mathematics and what it means to be mathematical, a space that is designed to send a clear message to queer and trans youth: we see you, you matter, and you belong,” Waid added.
Hudson River Trading (HRT) is excited to partner with MAA in the launch of their flagship LGBTQ+ outreach program, The “Camp” of Math Queeries (CMQ). HRT’s greatest strength is our people — the success of our work and the vibrancy of our culture reflects each and every employee’s distinct identity and perspective. Initiatives like CMQ are critical to building an equitable industry; they target barriers to accessibility by highlighting how young people can excel and find joy in STEM because of their unique identity, not in spite of it. We’re proud to support MAA’s important work of igniting passion for math and problem-solving in diverse learning communities, and hope to see these talented students grow to love math as much as we do as they move throughout the program.
