In Memoriam: 2024

Jim Simons passed away on May 10, 2024, at the age of 86. Simons had three parts to his professional life: mathematician at Stony Brook University, hedge fund investor (Renaissance Technologies), and philanthropist through the Simons Foundation and other initiatives. He was a generous donor to the mathematics community and his life and career was documented in his 2019 biography The Man Who Solved the Market: How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution. Kathleen A. Taylor passed away on May 4, 2024, at the age of 80. She was a member of the MAA for 33 years and a mathematics professor at Duquesne University for 39 years. During her career, Taylor provided significant service to the Allegheny Mountain Section of the MAA, including serving as 1st and 2nd Vice President, Section Chairperson, and Section Governor. For this and other service, she received the Meritorious Service Award from the Section in the year 2000. Samuel Goldberg was a member of the MAA for 72 years! His death was reported to the MAA in April 2024. Goldberg, born in March 1925, was an emeritus professor at Oberlin University, retiring in 1985. He published several textbooks during his career on topics such as probability and difference equations. Brief information about his career is available.

James (Jim) Ross Davidson passed away on March 29, 2024, at the age of 87. He was a member of the MAA for 30 years. Davidson served in the Air Force for twenty years, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Later in his career he worked in the aerospace industry and taught at a variety of universities in Oklahoma. More information about his life and career can be found in his obituary.

Andy C.F. Liu passed away on March 26, 2024, at the age of 77. He was a professor emeritus at the University of Alberta and a member of the MAA for 44 years. A generous donor to the MAA, Liu served on the Board of Governors, various committees, an as the problems editor for Math Horizons. Liu published seven problem books with the MAA and is the co-editor of a new book Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics. More information about his life and career can be found on his Wikipedia page.

Nicholas Lord passed away on March 1, 2024, at the age of 66. He was a Teacher of Mathematics at the Tonbridge School in Kent, England and a member of the MAA for 39 years.

Leslie P. Pook passed away on January 19, 2024. He retired from University College London as Visiting Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and he was a member of the MAA for 26 years. Pook was a leading expert on metal fatigue and fracture mechanics, on which he published five books. He was also an expert on flexagons, on which he published two books. Pook maintained an interesting website on these and other topics.

Gretchen Mooningham passed away on January 15, 2024, at the age of 78. She was a professor emerita at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan and a member of the MAA for 39 years. Mooningham facilitated the Sonia Kovalevsky Days and other activities to encourage more women to pursue careers in science and mathematics. For her work, she received several awards at her university, including the SVSU Women's History Month Award in 2004. More information about her life and career can be found in her obituary.

Frank Ryan passed away on January 1, 2024, at the age of 87. A member of the MAA for 57 years, Ryan is best known for leading the Cleveland Browns to their 1964 NFL championship. He was also a mathematician, teaching at Case Western Reserve when he was playing for the Browns. In the 1970’s, Ryan was the Director of House Information Systems for the United States House of Representatives for several years, directing the development of the first computerized voting system used by the US Congress. He also served as the Athletic Director at Yale University for ten years and as Vice President for Institutional Planning at Rice University.
