2026 MAA Annie and John Selden Prize for Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education Announced

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is delighted to announce Dr. Kathleen (Kate) Melhuish as the 2026 recipient of the Selden Prize.

The Annie and John Selden Prize for Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education recognizes outstanding Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) by scholars who have been active in the field for at most ten years. It honors those who have made significant contributions through multiple publications, projects, and studies that advance understanding of teaching, learning, and assessment in collegiate mathematics.

About This Year’s Recipient
Dr. Melhuish is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Texas State University. Their research focuses on teaching, learning, and assessment in proof-based mathematics, including conceptual thinking in modern algebra and the development of authentic, inclusive course activities. They have led projects ranging from small-scale qualitative investigations to large-scale quantitative studies, such as the Group Theory Concept Assessment, the Student Discourse Observation Tool, and the Authentic Mathematical Proof Activity framework.

Dr. Melhuish’s work demonstrates both methodological innovation and breadth, challenging conventional approaches to research in mathematics education while providing evidence-based insights that advance the field. Their scholarship reflects a commitment to rigor, inclusivity, and improving teaching and learning across proof-based mathematics courses.
