For the 2025-2026 competition cycle, the MAA AMC competitions will only be offered to schools with USA, Canada, APO/FPO/DPO mailing addresses, and schools registered with one of our AMC international partners. The MAA is working hard to broaden the scope and reach of the AMC program in the future.
How International Students Participate in AMC Competitions
International students participate in AMC competitions through one of our International Group Leaders (IGLs) listed below. Students must register for the competitions through the IGL in the country they reside.

Adewale Solarin is a professor of mathematics, COMSATS Distinguished Professor of Mathematics; President of AMU Pan-African Mathematical Olympiads Commission; Member of the Scientific Board, IBSP-UNESCO in Paris, France; Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Association of Nigerian Women in Mathematics; former Director/CEO of National Mathematical Centre in Abuja, Nigeria; former President of African Mathematical Union (AMU). Adewale was the brain behind the establishment of International Academy for the Gifted Ltd/Gte (IAGIFTED) in 2008 as a respond to the clarion call from African Academics in Diaspora for him to extend his mentorship of young Africans in the universities to the lower level to catch them young.

Carrie Brinkman

Carrie Brinkman has been teaching mathematics since 2004. She has taught in Minnesota public schools and in international high schools in Greece, Colombia, China, and Argentina. At her current school in Buenos Aires, Carrie runs a math competition club where high school students participate in the Argentine Math Olympiad, University of Waterloo contests, the Purple Comet, and the AMC.
Fuad Qarayev

Fuad Qarayev completed his bachelor's degree at Baku State University and obtained his master's degree from Sumgayit State University. He has taught mathematics for 17 years in various private and state general education institutions as well as in higher education institutions. For an extended period, he served as the team leader in mathematics at international subject Olympiads.
From 2014 to 2017, Fuad Qarayev worked as a leading advisor at the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, then served as the head of a department at the Institute of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan from 2017 to 2020, and held the position of sector manager at the Ministry of Science and Education from 2020 to 2023. Starting from the year 2023 he has been appointed as the deputy director of the Institute of Education. He is the author of three books and six scientific articles.
Fuad Qarayev was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Teacher" by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Jiangang Yao

Jiangang Yao was fascinated with mathematics as a child and started his involvement with mathematical Olympiads since then. He won the gold medal with full marks in the 35th International Mathematical Olympiad and got math PhD degree from UC Berkeley. He has been the coach for mathematical Olympiad at various levels for 30 years, and has written a few popular mathematical Olympiad books in Chinese. Now Dr. Yao is a fixed income portfolio manager in Hong Kong, and voluntarily organizes AMC and Math Kangaroo in Hong Kong and Macau.

Jianping Wu is a professor at School of Mathematical Sciences at Capital Normal University. He was the Assistant Secretary for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1990 in China. He was the Deputy Leader of China for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1997 in Argentina. He was the Deputy Leader of China for International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1999 in Romania. Jianping was the Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Mathematical Olympic Committee from 2004 to 2019.

Yichan Yuan is the founder and chief academic director of ASDAN China. She majored in finance, and had been a consultant at McKinsey.Co focusing on macro-economy research for 2 years. Following her passion for education, she founded ASDAN China at 2011 with a group of passionate educators, aiming to provide students in China the chances to challenge themselves and improve skills that can benefit them for life. ASDAN China has been working with many global competitions, which makes it the biggest international competition platform in China. Jorge Tipe

Jorge Tipe has been closely related with the mathematical olympiads in his country since he was in school. He is member of the Olympiad Committee of the Peruvian Mathematical Society and has been tutor or leader of the Peruvian delegation in different international olympiads such as IMO, Iberoamerican, Romanian Master, Rioplatense, etc. He has also published more than 20 books on mathematical contests. He studied mathematics at San Marcos University in Lima and did a master's degree in applied mathematics at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Russia. He is currently a professor at University of Engineering and Technology - UTEC, in Lima, and his area of interest is Discrete Mathematics.

Justin Freeman currently lives in New Hampshire, where he teaches math. During his career, he has taught at American public schools, boarding schools, and international schools in The Netherlands and North Macedonia. Throughout his career as a teacher he has also coached both cross country running and competitive mathematics. Justin grades IB exams and also helps grade the USAMO contest.

Le Anh Vinh, associate professor, is Vice Director General of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences (VNIES) and the Director of National Center for Sustainable Development of General Education Quality. Vinh got his B.Sc. in Math (with Honors) and Computer Science from the University of New South Wales, Australia in 2005 then pursued his PhD in Mathematics at Harvard University in 2010. He is the leader of the Vietnam team at the International Mathematics Olympiad from 2016 till now. He is also the chief local organizer of several competitions in Vietnam like American Math Contests, Kangaroo Math, Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge.

Makhamadkhan (Mamat) has participated at International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) in 2005, 2006. He enjoys solving Olympiad problems and organizes math camps for talented students in Kyrgyzstan. Currently, Mamat is a team leader of Kyrgyzstan at IMO.

Mr. TAS was born in Turkey in 1981. He is married and has three children. He enjoys spending time with his family and his students. He is an experienced math teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience in various countries. He holds both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from M.H.D Kazakhstan State University, where he studied from 2001 to 2008. His teaching journey began as a Mathematics Teacher at Kostanay Lyceum Bilim Innovation School for Gifted Children in Kazakhstan from 2008 to 2011. From there, he continued his career as a Mathematics Teacher and Administrator at Burch Jordanian-Turkish School in Jordan from 2011 to 2016. In 2016, he moved to Iraq. He is currently working as a Mathematics Teacher and the Coordinator for the American Mathematics Contest (AMC) and the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) for Stirling Schools in Iraq. In addition, he volunteers as an online math teacher for refugee students through firstbricks.org.

Penny Chow has been engaging students in mathematics competitions such as the American Mathematics Competitions for more than decade in Southeast Asia. She believes that one of the keys to opening up up access to higher-level mathematics is to engage students in the math that they do and what better way than through a competition whereby they can learn problem solving skills, flexibility of thinking and analytical skills. Penny Chow is the co-founder of the math magazine-Math Oasis, is a writer, translator and Toastmasters. When she is not busy chasing students to collect their awards, she enjoys playing with Maine-coon cat Steco.
Peter Shiue

Peter Shiue received has a B.S. National Taiwan Normal University, 1964, and in 1971 he received a Ph.D. Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He was a math professor at various universities in Taiwan in the 1970s and is a professor of mathematics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas since 1985. Peter is the recipient of: (1) Italian National Research Council Fellow 1970-1971, (2) Humboldt Foundation, Germany Fellow, 1973-1974, (3) UNLV, College of Sciences Distinguished Teaching Award, 1989, (4) UNLV Barrick Distinguished Research Scholar Award 1996, (5) UNLV College of Sciences Distinguished Teaching Award 2000, (6) Distinguished Alumni of National Taiwan Normal University, 2011. He published 1 book in English, 10 books in Chinese, and more than 100 refereed research articles (mostly in the USA).
Regis Prado Barbosa

Regis Barbosa participated in Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM) earning five gold medals. Since 2010 he is involved in Brazilian training for international mathematical contests. He is author of many problems of Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad. He was an IMO silver medalist in 2007 and 2008, and an IMO bronze medalist in 2006. He was an IMO Coordinator in 2017. Regis then became the team leader of the Brazilian IMO team in 2018. And he is a member of the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM) commission.
Roumen Anguelov

Roumen Anguelov holds an MSc (Sofia, Bulgaria, 1981) and a PhD (UNISA, South Africa, 1998) in Mathematics. He is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at University of Pretoria, where he worked 2002 – 2021, being the Head of the Department of Mathematics for the last 8 years. He is an Elected Member of the Academy of Sciences of South Africa (ASSAf) and Associate Member of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Roumen Anguelov was involved in organizing the national Olympiads and other competitions in Bulgaria and in South Africa. He participated as a student in the IMO 1974. He is passionate about promoting mathematics and nurturing mathematics talent.
Roumen Anguelov currently resides in the Cayman Islands and he is affiliated with 100% Math Learning Centre.
Sajjad Abedi

Sajjad Abedi is a young educator working as a International Relations Coordinator at Resalat Institutions in Herat, Afghanistan. Sajjad manages and coordinates different global competitions, including AMC, the KGL contest, HIPPO Olympiad, and partnering with many private and public schools across the country to have them participate. Sajjad's passion is to support gifted students who have an interest in STEAM fields by helping them take part in such top competitions so that they can be successful in all their future endeavors. Sajjad is also a soccer player who has won different local awards.

Simon Chua is a recipient of the following awards: Paul Erdos Award (2006) presented by the World Federation of National Mathematics Competition in 2006 for his significant contribution to the enrichment of mathematics learning in the Philippines; the Aryabhatta International Award (2007) presented by the Indian Government for his contribution to research and innovation in teaching mathematics to school children; and BH Neumann Award (2011) presented by the Australian Mathematics Trust for his significant contribution to the enrichment of mathematics learning in Australia. The Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute in the Philippines awarded him the Gawad Leadership and Innovations for Development Relevant to Science Education (2014) for showing a strong leadership in the training of elementary and high school students in basic and advanced mathematics, and in Philippine participation in international mathematics competitions.

Ms. Nupur Gupta has been a Math educator for the IGCSE, IB MYP, and IBDP programs for 19+ years. She is a gold medalist in Mathematics and is passionate about demystifying the subject and eliminating common phobias surrounding it. She is consistently recognized for her ability to make mathematics approachable, meaningful, and enjoyable for students. She believes that every concept has a logical derivation that, once understood, stays with the learner for life. Her innovative use of technology in teaching has enabled her to bring this philosophy alive in the classroom. She is currently the Head of Center for Mathematical studies in Exponential Leadership (R&D), Indus Trust, India. Under her leadership, several initiatives have been launched like Math Circle and Blockchain in Education. Math Circle is a first of its kind program to be run by a school in India that nurtures mathematical mindedness. She plays a key role in mentoring both students and teachers, fostering a new generation of educators to embrace innovative teaching methodologies.

Mr. Chandra has been leading organizations and working with students for more than a decade; he is heavily experienced in guiding students, as well as counselling and consulting on several areas including university admissions in the United States. As the Senior Counsellor with TLUPS and the academic director of Enrichment programs in Cedar Rapids Community School Board, and as a researcher associated with the consortium of universities and colleges in Iowa, Chandra spends time in Iowa teaching, conducting research and working with educators and policy makers. He is also an invited fellow with the Canadian Parliament Teachers Institute. He is the lead editor of the Transitions in Global Education research journal. You'll find Mr. Chandra's articles published in such newspapers as The Hindu, Huffington Post, the Indian Express, and Hindustan Times. He is accredited with the American School Counselling Association as designated College admission specialist as well as an ACA accredited stress and strain management counselor and as a career guidance practitioner and base his practice out of Boston and Iowa. He lives in Westdale Village, Canada with his family.
