David Bressoud, Vilma Mesa, and Chris Rasmussen, Editors.
This MAA Notes volume presents findings from the MAA National Study of College Calculus, a comprehensive investigation into Calculus I programs across the United States. Led by David Bressoud, Marilyn Carlson, Vilma Mesa, and Chris Rasmussen, the study explores why many students—especially those intending to pursue STEM—choose not to continue past Calculus I. The volume offers data-driven insights into student experiences, instructional practices, and departmental dynamics, and it provides practical, research-based recommendations for improving student success in calculus.
This work laid the foundation for the MAA’s Progress through Calculus initiative, which expands on the study’s findings to support institutional change and improve the full sequence of calculus instruction.
