The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) mourns the passing of longtime member Dr. Joan Ruth Leitzel, who passed peacefully on March 5, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio.
A mathematician, educator, and national leader in higher education, Dr. Leitzel devoted her career to strengthening mathematics and advancing the role of higher education in public life. She joined the faculty of mathematics at The Ohio State University in 1965 and later served as Associate Provost for Curriculum and Instruction. Her leadership extended nationally through service at the National Science Foundation, as Provost and Interim Chancellor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and as President of the University of New Hampshire from 1996 to 2002.
Throughout her career, Dr. Leitzel remained deeply connected to the mathematics community and to MAA. She served in leadership roles across several national organizations dedicated to advancing mathematics and science education. In recognition of her lasting contributions, MAA honored her with the Gung and Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics in 2014.
Dr. Leitzel was also closely connected to the legacy of her late husband, mathematician Dr. James R. C. Leitzel, whose contributions to mathematics education are commemorated through the MAA Leitzel Lecture, presented annually at MAA MathFest. The lecture series reflects the Leitzels’ shared commitment to supporting mathematics education and the broader mathematical community.
Those who wish to honor Dr. Leitzel’s memory may consider a gift to MAA Project NExT, a program co-founded by Dr. James Leitzel that supports the next generation of mathematics faculty.
MAA extends our deepest condolences to the Leitzel family and to all who were touched by Dr. Joan Leitzel’s life and work.
