Borough of Manhattan Community College
Title: Modeling Membrane Dynamics In Excitable Tissue
Director: Brett A. Sims
Dates of Program: June 1 - July 8, 2011
Summary: This summer research program at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) will give four undergraduate students the opportunity to study and perform interdisciplinary research in modeling practices for building deterministic models of bioelectric phenomena in excitable tissue (neural and heart tissue). The student research participants will work in teams focusing on modeling membrane dynamics (ionic channel dynamics) and wave propagation. The students will learn how electrical properties of excitable tissue are quantified and will participate in developing basic deterministic models describing membrane dynamics and action potential propagation at the molecular level.
