Mathematical Treasure: Euler’s Commentationes Arithmeticae

Author(s):
Frank J. Swetz (The Pennsylvania State University)

The Swiss-born mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) accomplished much of his mathematical work at the Russian Imperial Academy of Science in St. Petersburg during 1727-1741 and 1766-1783. In 1849, the Academy published a collection of his mathematical works, Commentationes Arithmeticae, in his honor. This is the title page of the work.

Two pages of the “Table of Contents” provide evidence of the scope of Euler’s research.
