Top High School Math Olympians from USAMO Announced by MAA American Mathematics Competitions

The winners of the 46th Annual United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), the top high school math olympians, were announced June 5 during a ceremony at the U.S. Department of State. More than 300,000 students participated in the MAA American Mathematics Competitions (AMC), organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) which culminates in the USAMO. These twelve high school students were the top scorers on the USAMO, the final invitational exam in a challenging series of MAA AMC math exams.

The MAA also announced the students who will compete on the U.S. team in the International Mathematical Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 12 to 23, 2017. In 2015 and 2016, the U.S. team won first place at the International Mathematical Olympiad in which top high school math students compete with their international peers from more than 100 countries.

“The Mathematical Association of America applauds the accomplishments of all the students who participated in the USAMO and the MAA American Mathematics Competitions, and congratulates these top math students on their achievement,” said Michael Pearson, the executive director of the Mathematical Association of America. “Their problem-solving skills will accompany them throughout their lives, and we look forward to their future success.”

The 2017 USAMO winners are (in alphabetical order): Zachary Chroman, Andrew Gu, James Lin, Daniel Liu, Michael Ren, Victor Rong, Ashwin Sah , Mihir Singhal, Alec Sun, Kada Williams, Yuan Yao, and William Zhao.

Gu and Williams both tied for first place, scoring 32 points out of a possible 42 on this year’s USAMO exam. Returning for their second year as USAMO winners, Lin, Singhal, Sun, and Yao, were also among the top twelve scorers in 2016.

The 2017 U.S. IMO team is: Ankan Bhattacharya, Zachary Chroman, Andrew Gu, Vincent Huang, James Lin, and Junyao Peng.

Bhattacharya and Peng are both returning team members from the gold medal winning 2016 team.

The winners of the United States of America Junior Olympiad (USAJMO), who are the top MAA AMC students in 10th grade and below were also announced June 5.
