Mathematician Named Best Job for 2014 by CareerCast

CareerCast recently announced its annual ranking of the 10 best jobs for 2014. Congratulations mathematicians, you came in first this year. Nine out of the top 10 jobs are in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) category with statistician ranked third and actuary ranked fourth. CareerCast ranks the 200 most populated jobs based on four factors: environment, income, outlook, and stress.

"I, along with the MAA membership, am proud of the jobs mathematicians do every day and the importance of the profession," said Michael Pearson, MAA Executive Director. "We have long known that a strong background in mathematics, especially when coupled with basic skills in computing and data analysis, provide great preparation for many fantastic careers."

Mathematician moved up 17 places from 2013. Its high ranking is attributable to work environment, high income and high outlook, and low stress. The midlevel income for a mathematician, according to CareerCast, is $101,360.

The three top jobs (mathematician, tenured university professor, and statistician) jumped double digits on the list due to the Bureau of Labor Statistics updating their database to include more recent statistics and projections through 2022.
