In the proposed budget for FY 2008, funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF) rises to $6.43 billion, an increase of $409 million (or 6.8 percent) above the 2007 budget request. At the same time, the U.S. Congress hasn't yet completed action on NSF's 2007 request. The FY 2007 funding bill passed by the House, which is now awaiting Senate consideration, would provide $5.92 billion.</p></div></div></div>Srinivasa S. R. Varadhan to Receive 2007 Abel Prize

R. Varadhan</a>, of New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, has been awarded the 2007 <a href="http://www.abelprisen.no/en/">Abel Prize</a> in mathematics by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Prof. Varadhan will receive the Abel Prize from King Harald V of Norway, in Oslo, on May 22. <p><a href="http://www-math.mit.edu/~dav/">David Vogan</a> of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced the mathematical breakthrough on Monday, March 19, at MIT. <p>The May/June 2006 issue of <em>FOCUS</em> included a report about the creation, by Presidential order, of a National Mathematics Advisory Panel, intended to advise the President and his Secretary of Education about the results of research in mathematics education and how they might be used to improve the teaching of mathematics in American schools. NSF DUE (Division of Undergraduate Education) has posted a program description for "Improving Undergraduate STEM Education" that consolidates a substantial portion of DUE's programs, while also offering a much more flexible proposal process. In fact, the program description has no restrictions on specific proposal elements, budget, or duration of proposed projects, other than that projects should advance the broad agenda of improvement of undergraduate STEM education.</div>
