Étienne Bézout (1730–1783) was a French mathematician noted for his work on the theory of equations and as a textbook writer. Many of his texts were composed for the use of the military. His *Cours de Mathématiques *was a six-volume work completed during the years 1770–1782 and intended for the mathematical training of naval and artillery personnel. The title page shown here is from an abbreviated 1815 edition.
