Attend a Professional Development Workshop
OPEN Math offers small, intensive online summer professional development (PD) workshops and PD activities throughout the year for higher education mathematics faculty.
Eligibility Requirements
Due to federal funding and our evaluation plan, all participants must be instructors of record at post-secondary institutions within North American time zones. This often excludes graduate students, except those who are teaching courses as instructors of record while completing their PhDs.
Based on availability and subject matter, we may also accept high school teachers or retired faculty. Some workshops may have additional requirements, such as holding a leadership role within the department or teaching/coordinating a particular math course.
If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact us at programs@maa.org.

Frequently Asked Questions
Registration generally opens in March, with deadlines staggered throughout the summer about four to six weeks before a given workshop begins. Workshops are capped at 28 participants, so registration will close when a workshop has reached its capacity or when the deadline passes

The summer workshops are designed to be immersive and engaging, with between 20 and 30 hours of direct contact. In addition to the workshop itself, there are often pre- and post-workshop asynchronous activities. Full participation is important to get the most out of the workshop and support our evaluation efforts. If you anticipate needing to miss any part of the workshop, please contact us at programs@maa.org before registering to discuss your situation.
Yes, the workshops are recorded for evaluation purposes as part of our NSF funding. These recordings are not publicly available, as the workshops are designed to be highly interactive with extensive breakout sessions and active participation. We believe that the full benefit of the workshop is gained through live attendance. So no, participants cannot watch the recording in place of attending the workshop live. In rare cases where a participant needs to miss a small portion, access to the recording may be provided at the discretion of the workshop facilitators.
In compliance with our grant funding, we permit participants to register for only one summer workshop each year. This restriction only applies to MAA OPEN Math workshops running within the same summer.
The cost may vary depending on the workshop, but generally, each summer workshop and fall learning community costs $75 per participant. We also offer discounts for faculty at Minority-Serving Institutions and occasionally offer other discounts. As an NSF-funded program, the workshops are open to everyone, and we do not offer special discounts for MAA members.
If cost is a barrier for you, please email programs@maa.org to set up a conversation with the project leadership team.
Those who cancel at least 1 week prior to the first session of the workshop will receive a full refund. After that date, only 50% of the amount paid will be refunded.
I learned a tremendous amount. There were a lot of resources, and I hope I take the time to dig down and read some more! I feel much more up-to-date, informed, and prepared to implement a few changes to my teaching. I have more confidence now that I’ve participated in this workshop and learned from so many other instructors.
Very supportive and hands-on with providing resources, help, and suggestions. The setup was very effective and felt not exhausting for an all-day all all-week workshop. The energy was great.
I’ve participated in this workshop and learned from so many other instructors. I have been teaching for more than 25 years and I am still a work in progress. This workshop has reinvigorated my love of teaching and will hopefully enhance student learning.
The use of online tools was outstanding, the content was practical and backed by research, and the size was great (number of attendees, number of facilitators, amount of material covered, and time devoted).
I loved that we were taught how to do TBIL by actually doing it in each session. This allowed us to see how to efficiently facilitate it from experienced faculty and allowed us to experience how students will feel engaging in it. I also loved how open and honest the facilitators were about their experiences, and how much support they provided (and continue to provide).
There was a lot of active time and hands-on work. It was great to do (and not just listen). There was also a clear vision for a product output (our group activities) and enough time to complete them.
