Archives Spotlight: NCTM Oral History Project Records

NCTM Oral History Project Records

The following article, featured as part of the Archives of American Mathematics Spotlight, was published in the August/September 2004 issue of MAA FOCUS. The full issue is available here (pdf).

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Oral History Task Force established the NCTM Oral History Project in 2002. Chaired by Dr. David L. Roberts, an associate of the International Virtual Institute for Historical Studies of Mathematics and research fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, the group has initiated a series of interviews with leaders in the mathematics education community. The interviews are taped and transcribed, and both intervewee and interviewer review and edit the transcripts.

To date, Dr. Roberts has conducted interviews with Stanley J. Bezuszka, F. Joe Crosswhite, Floyd L. Downs, Edgar L. Edwards Jr., John C. Egsgard, James D. Gates, Shirley A. Hill, Lola J. May, Bruce E. Meserve, and Dorothy S. Strong. More than 60 mathematics educators have been identified as future interview subjects.

The Archives of American Mathematics (AAM) began receiving material from the NCTM Oral History Project in December 2003. We currently hold more than two linear feet of audiocassette recordings of the interviews, typed transcripts, release forms, and related materials. We can provide access to these materials on-site and answer questions and/or provide copies for off-site researchers.

These well-researched, quality interviews are valuable resources for mathematics historians, mathematics educators, and other researchers. A complete inventory of the AAM's NCTM Oral History Project Records is available online.

The Archives of American Mathematics (AAM) is a unit of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. Individuals interested in conducting research or donating materials or who have general questions about the AAM should contact Carol Mead, Archivist:, (512) 495-4539.
