The AMC 10 and 12 are each a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice competition for students in grades 10 and below (AMC 10) and 12 and below (AMC 12) respectively.

The AMC 10 and 12 are given at the same time on two different dates: a primary “A” date, and an alternate “B” date for those who are unable to participate in the “A” date or who wish to take both the A and the B versions of the competition.

The AMC 10 covers mathematics normally associated with grades 9 and 10. The AMC 10 assumes knowledge of elementary algebra; basic geometry knowledge including the Pythagorean Theorem, area and volume formulas; elementary number theory; and elementary probability. What are excluded are trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school mathematics curriculum, including the above as well as trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry but excludes calculus.

In addition to developing students’ problem-solving skills, the AMC 10/12 are the first step on the path to qualifying for the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team and other international competitions. Learn more about our invitational competitions here.
