Mathematics on a New Stage: That Math Show is Playing Off-Broadway This Summer

If you have attended MAA MathFest, there is a good chance you have seen Dr. Arthur Benjamin in action at the backgammon tables. This summer, Art is taking that energy Off-Broadway, and we could not be more excited to spread the word. He will also be joining us for a special appearance at MAA MathFest!

That Math Show is a one-person Off-Broadway production now playing at Theater 555 in New York City, and it is the kind of show that will resonate deeply with anyone who has spent a career in mathematics. The show moves between mental calculation, mathematical magic, and some of the most elegant ideas in the field, including Fibonacci numbers, pi, and number theory that looks like sorcery until the moment it suddenly doesn't. What sets it apart is its intellectual generosity: Art doesn't simply dazzle the audience, he deconstructs the mathematics behind each feat in real time. You will leave with genuine insight and, very likely, a few new skills.

The show is presented in association with the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and has been covered in The New York Times, Scientific American, and People Magazine. Reader's Digest named Art "America's Best Math Whiz."

That Math Show runs June 11 through August 16 at Theater 555, 555 West 42nd Street in New York City. Tickets and details are available at thatmathshow.com.

“It has always been a dream of mine to do a show like this someday. I have been a theater lover all my life and frequently see shows in New York, when I'm in town. During my year at MoMath, I have seen more than 20 Broadway or off-Broadway shows. It's just so exciting to be part of that world. I'll be doing about 6 shows a week between now and mid-August.”

Dr. Arthur Benjamin is a longtime MAA member, Harvey Mudd College professor, and valued supporter of our work.
