Making the Transition: Moving Students from Success on AMC12 to AIME

Each year, over 13,000 students qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) with a strong score on the AMC12, but many are then slammed with a score of 0 or 1 on this more challenging AIME exam. This workshop, sponsored by the MAA Special Interest Group on Teaching Advanced High School Mathematics, will assist high school mathematics coaches in preparing students for the AIME exams and two-year and small liberal arts college faculty in preparing students for the Putnam exam. In preparation for the workshop, participants will work through problem sets and critique student solutions. The onsite component will focus on two central themes: how to solve problems and how to teach how to solve problems. The workshop will offer extended support to teachers and their students.  A website containing the workshop material will serve as a forum for the participants and others, who share this interest, to discuss problem solving and coaching strategies.
