Population biology and epidemiology are exciting research areas that provide many opportunities for mathematicians and biologists to interact with students on problems of current interest. This workshop will introduce college mathematics faculty to modeling techniques and computer technology useful to the formulation, analysis, and numerical simulation of models concerning multiple-population interactions, disease dynamics, and the effects of intervention programs on population or disease control. In particular, mathematical methods in difference equations, differential equations, and stochastic models will be summarized and applied to the study of biological problems. Workshop participants will gain first-hand experience exploring many problems suitable for undergraduate research.
