Past CUPM Curriculum Recommendations
The documents available here present an overview of the work of CUPM since it?s beginnings in 1953, as well as some of the pre-history (see W.L. Duren?s 1965 article referenced below). The materials are meant to serve as both an historical resource and a tool for consideration of the modern undergraduate program in mathematics. If you are interested in more context, see the CUPM deep history page.
- 1954-55 Report of the Committee on the Undergraduate Mathematical Program to the Association, describing the initial steps taken to carry out their charge to ?consider the problems of making available in our society the values of modern mathematics.?
- A General Curriculum in Mathematics for Colleges, by W. L. Duren, Jr., the first report of CUPM that addresses the core undergraduate mathematics major, published in the American Mathematical Monthly, Vol. 72 (Oct. 1965, pp. 825-831).
- CUPM, The History of an Idea, by W. L. Duren, Jr., first published in the American Mathematical Monthly, Vol. 74, No. 1, Part 2: Fiftieth Anniversary Issue (Jan. 1967, pp. 23-37).
- Compendium of CUPM Recommendations, comprised of about twenty reports from the 1960s and 1970s on improving the undergraduate curriculum.
- Reshaping College Mathematics, edited by Lynn Arthur Steen, was published as MAA Notes 13 in 1989. In addition to a collection of articles on various aspects of the undergraduate program, the 1981 CUPM Guidelines are reprinted as the first six chapters of this volume.
- Heeding the Call for Change: Suggestions for Curricular Action, edited by Lynn Arthur Steen, was published as MAA Notes 22 in 1992, and included the 1991 CUPM report, The Undergraduate Major in the Mathematical Sciences.
