Like traditional splines, subdivision surfaces allow designers to create models from control meshes in intuitive ways. Unlike splines, subdivision surfaces can use control meshes of arbitrary topology, a distinct advantage for the computer animation industry, as attested by several recent movies from Pixar and others.

Nevertheless, the mathematical analysis of subdivision surfaces is not easy, and until now was virtually available only scattered in many papers. This book aims to summarize the current knowledge on the subject, focusing more on the mathematics and less on algorithms and applications. For that, the reader is referred to Subdivision Methods for Geometric Design by Warren and Weimer, for instance.

The target audience is researchers, instructors, and graduate students. The book is carefully written and can probably be used for an advanced graduate course for mathematically inclined students in computer graphics and computational mathematics, and also for students in differential geometry interested in applications.

Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo is a researcher at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His main interests are numerical methods in computer graphics, but he remains an algebraist at heart. He is also one of the designers of the Lua language.
