Title: M-cubed: Mentoring for Minorities in Mathematics

Director:

  • Anthony Tongen

Email:

  • tongenal (at) jmu (dot) edu

Dates of Program: May 14 - June 29, 2012

Summary:

For the last three summers, M-cubed has been investigating sowing games (also called Mancala-type games). The goal for this summer is to divide students into two groups. One group will investigate the connection between Tchoukaillon and Tchuka Ruma, which are the two main single-player sowing games. Our goal is to write an article on this topic for for submission by the end of the seven week research experience. The second group will investigate two-player sowing games. We will examine two common two-player sowing games, Mancala and Ayo, and investigate mathematical patterns that occur. Our goal is to write another article on two-player sowing games based on our research findings.
