Like Your Odds?

In light of Warren Buffet's Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge, Business Insider is referring readers to a 2012 video in which DePaul University math professor Jeff Bergen explains that the odds of filling out a perfect bracket are in fact better than the "one in 9.2 quintillion" figure widely cited.

Bergen argues that by filling out the bracket other than totally randomly—by bringing some common sense and knowledge of the game to bear—one can improve the odds to around one in 128 billion.

Of course, as Bergen says,

If everyone in the entire United States knew something about basketball and filled out a bracket, then there's a less than one fourth of one percent chance that anyone anywhere in the U.S. will get a perfect bracket.
