Frenkel Shares His Love of Math

In Love and Math, due out in October, UC Berkeley mathematician Edward Frenkel tells the story of his personal path to mathematics, describes his quest for a grand unified theory of mathematics, and explains recent mathematical results that seldom make it into the classroom.

An advocate of the Common Core State Standards, Frenkel believes that the way mathematics is currently taught not only turns students off the subject, but contributes to societal ills like the global economic crisis.

"Mathematical models were misused" by financial institutions, says Mr. Frenkel. "People who were in charge did not fully understand them but were using them anyway."
