Data Science Requires More than Just Math

To be a data scientist, says the director of an Illinois Institute of Technology graduate program in data science, one needs not only a base in statistical theory, computer programming, and data modeling, but also the communication skills to discuss these technicalities with those less quantitatively inclined.

“Data science brings a distinct set of challenges to business communication,” says Shlomo Argamon.

How does one explain statistical evidence and analytical results without oversimplifying or creating confusion? Students need to learn how to weave results into a coherent story, how to explain statistical assumptions and caveats clearly, and how to create insight-producing data visualizations.
