MAA Advocacy Leads to More Funding for Undergraduate Mathematics

July 14, 2009

Earlier this year, the MAA launched an advocacy effort to increase the federal investment in programs to advance undergraduate mathematics education, including programs administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Last week the Senate Appropriations Committee passed its version of the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations bill to provide FY 2010 funding for the NSF and program related to mathematics education.  The bill provides $6.9 billion for the total NSF budget, or $426.4 million above the FY 2009 level, and $128.2 million below the President’s budget request.  According to the Senate version, the Education and Human Resources Directorate (EHR), which sponsors a variety of programs in the mathematical sciences, will receive $12.5 million over the FY 2009 enacted level, bringing the total to $857.8 million - or level to the President’s budget request.  This is $5.1 million below the House version of the bill, which passed last month. Additional language can be found in the attached chart related to the Division of Mathematical Sciences.

The MAA will continue to advocate for increased levels of funding for programs that will benefit the future of undergraduate mathematics education.  For additional information, please contact Dave Zook or Kelly Pollitt at B&D Consulting at (202) 312-7400.
