Fewer Math and Science Ph.D.s

According to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education (Monday, November 11, 2002; online, for subscribers only, at http://chronicle.com/internal-archive?url=/daily/2002/11/2002111101n.htm), the total number of Ph.D’s awarded in the United States has declined sharply over the last few years. In fact, the 2001 number is the same as the 1993 number. The decrease is mostly due to fewer Math, Science and Engineering degrees (down 6.5% since 1998). Doctorates in other fields decreased by only 0.9% during the same period. On the other hand, the Chronicle points out that the percentage of doctorates awarded to women has increased. The survey was produced by the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center; check out their website at http://www.norc.uchicago.edu for more information.
