| 5/20/2013 | GUIDELINES August 1, 2012 1. The Morgan Prize, endowed by a gift from Mrs. Frank (Brennie) Morgan, is awarded to an undergraduate student (or students having submitted joint work) for outstanding research in mathematics. 2. The recipient(s) will receive an award of $1,200 and a certificate. If the Prize is given for joint work, the cash award will be divided among the recipients. 3. No more than one Prize shall be awarded each year. 4. In addition, one or more nominees may receive a Certificate of Honorable Mention. 5. If no other funding is available, income from the Prize fund may be used to pay normal travel costs for a winner to attend the award ceremony and registration for the meeting at which the prize is awarded. 6. A nominee for the Prize must have been an undergraduate at a college or university in Canada, Mexico or the United States or its possessions in December of the year prior to her or his nomination. 7. Nomination of a student for the Prize may be made by any individual including the nominee (self nomination). 8. Every nomination for the Prize must include the nominee's research paper or papers and at least one letter of support from a person, normally a faculty member, familiar with the student's research. 9. Research paper(s) supporting the nomination must have been submitted to a journal, to a member of the mathematics department of the student's institution (as in the case of an undergraduate thesis), or posted on an online archive such as arXiv.org prior to the student's graduation. Publication of the research is not required. The research need not be confined to a single paper; it may be contained in several papers. |

Nominations must be received by the Secretary of the AMS by June 30 of the year prior to the award on behalf of students who were undergraduates in December of the previous year. 11. Prize recipients are selected by a standing joint committee of the AMS, MAA, and SIAM (AMS-MAA-SIAM Joint Committee on the Morgan Prize). The joint committee is to consist of six members, each to serve for a term of three years, two appointed by the President of each society. The decisions of this Committee should be final. 12. The AMS-MAA-SIAM Joint Committee on the Morgan Prize is to submit the name(s) of prize winner(s) and those to receive honorable mention, along with citations appropriate for a prize booklet, to the Secretary of MAA no later than September 15 of the year prior to the award. 13. At least two of every three consecutive awards of the prize shall occur at a joint national meeting of the AMS and MAA. SIAM may choose to present the award at its national meeting in place of the joint AMS/MAA meeting. If SIAM chooses to give the award at its national meeting, then they should notify the Secretary of the MAA before September 15 prior to the year of the award. 14. If the award is to be presented at a national meeting of SIAM, the citations for the winner(s) and honorable mention(s) should appear in the prize booklet of the JMM in the year of the award along with a note that they will be presented at the SIAM meeting. 15. Commencing in 2012, and every five years thereafter, the guidelines for the Morgan Prize shall be reviewed by the governing bodies of the AMS, MAA, and SIAM, according to each society's rules and procedures. |

| 1/28/2011 | The primary charge to this committee is to select annually up to three candidates for the Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics, and recommend these to the Board of Governors for their approval. This committee shall revise as necessary the guidelines for selecting section award winners, describing in detail the information to be sought from nominators, specifying both content and format, and listing ways of documenting extraordinary accomplishment in teaching mathematics in college or university. Sections shall submit to the standing committee by March 1 the names of the Section award winners together with the documentation. The committee shall select, no later than the following summer, no more than three MAA-award winners from those named by the Sections, with the provision that one of the winners may be selected from another source. Additional duties, in support of this primary charge are as follows; For the whole committee: An annual meeting of the committee at the joint MS-MAA winter meetings. Ongoing review of policy and procedure (eligibility guidelines, nomination form, selection process, rules for who may be selected for the award); suggested changes to be reviewed by the Coordinating Council on Awards, and when necessary, approved by the Executive Council and Board of Governors. Review of all nomination packets received by the National Secretary by March 1 (and forwarded to committee members), and selection (by a multi-screening process and discussion by email) of the final candidates for the Haimo Award, to be recommended to the Board of Governors for approval at their summer meeting at Mathfest. | 1/28/2011 | The aim of this prize is to promote and recognize research in undergraduate mathematics education (RUME). It is to be given every other year to a researcher who has been in the field at most ten years; that is, it has been at most 10 years since her/his Ph.D. in mathematics education, or for those not holding a doctorate in education, since publication of her/his first paper in RUME. The recipient should have a significant record of published work in RUME, normally several articles in reputable journals, or in Research in Collegiate Mathematics Education (which is refereed like a research journal). Membership in MAA is not required for recipients of the Prize. The Prize is to be presented during the Prize Session of the Joint Mathematics Meetings in the winter of alternate years. The recipient is to be decided by a Selden Prize Committee that is appointed by the President of MAA in consultation with the Executive Committee of SIGMAA on RUME. The Prize is to include a certificate and a citation, written by the selection Committee, published as part of the Joint Mathematics Meetings Prize Session, and posted on the SIGMAA on RUME website. It is named for the late Edwin Beckenbach, a long-time leader in the publications program of the Association and a well-known professor of mathematics at the University of California at Los Angeles. The Prize of $2,500 is intended to recognize the author(s) of a distinguished, innovative book published by the MAA and to encourage the writing of such books. The award is not given on a regularly scheduled basis. To be considered for the Beckenbach Prize a book must have been published during the five years preceding the Award.
