    Baron Georg von Vega robbed and murdered (apparently) near Vienna, Austria. Von Vega was a military officer and mathematician famous for both his military campaigns and his table of logarithms.

    August Ferdinand Moebius died in Leipzig, Germany. He discovered his famous Moebius strip in September, 1858. Johann Benedict Listing had discovered the same surface two months earlier.

    Hermann Grassmann died in Szczecin, Poland (then Stettin, Prussia, Germany). One of his first applications of his vector methods was to tides in 1840.
